ELEVEN

Belinda was worried about Wolfgang. He’d been too silent on the drive home. Every time she attempted to start a conversation, he’d murmured a noncommittal answer. His brow creased with worry, and his hands clenched the steering wheel so hard she was surprised it didn’t snap in half.

“Wolf? What’s wrong?”

He parked the truck in front of his cabin and sighed.

“Nothing. Let’s get to bed. I have an early morning. I promised Dot I would stop by her house and fix her porch.”

He slid out of the car and slammed the door. Belinda followed.

“Hey.” She gently grabbed his arm. “Do you want to talk about it? I can tell something is bothering you.”

He rubbed his forehead. “No. I’m fine.”

He clearly wasn’t fine.

Maybe he needed a diversion?

She had an idea‌—‌the perfect way for a snow fairy to distract Wolfgang Klaus.

He stomped up the stairs to the cabin, and Belinda raced behind the truck. She scooped up a pile of snow and smoothed it into a ball. Wolf’s head hung as he approached the front door, like the weight of the world was crushing him. Belinda smiled to herself and took aim. The snowball hit him squarely on the back of his head.

Wolf stopped walking.

“Belinda?” His voice was low and grumbly.

She bit her lip. “Yes, Wolf?”

“Did you just throw a snowball at me?”

“Yes, Wolf.” She tried to keep her voice neutral.

He turned and wiped the wet slush off the back of his neck.

He did not look amused.

But he also no longer looked melancholy, so she decided to continue with her game.

“Let me guess. Snow fairies are masters at making snowballs.”

“How did you know? We are.” She packed another snowball in her hands and tossed it into the air.

“I hope you’re not planning to throw that at me.” He growled the words.

“Actually, I was.” She whipped the snowball at his head, but he ducked just in the nick of time.

Wolfgang had very good reflexes!

“That was ill-advised.” He leaned over and scraped the snow off a porch railing. He packed it hard in his hands.

Belinda slid behind the back of the truck. She could hear the wind rustling through the trees, see the errant snowflakes swirling through the air. And she could hear Wolfgang’s breath, which she knew was making frosty clouds in front of his face.

She smiled to herself. This was just what he needed‌—‌a winter activity to remind him about simple pleasures and fun.

She poked her head over the truck bed, and Wolf lobbed a snowball in her direction. The wind laughed as it carried to her, rotating it in front of her eyes. She saw everything at once‌—‌the snowball on its trajectory, a snowy owl landing on a branch overhead, a chipmunk hopping to a crack under the porch. But before the snowball was even halfway to her, she sprang up and raced to a pine tree next to the shed.

“Where did you go?” Wolf asked.

“Over here,” she answered softly.

He turned to face the direction of her voice, and she saw the confusion on his face.
